Chapter 11

When Samira made it to the studio the next morning, Sidney was already in the back working on his painting. She was bursting with excitement and nervousness over her past evening with Joshua and her evening to come with him. Tonight would be the night. If everything goes well, all of her long awaiting fantasies would come true. Seducing him shouldn’t be that hard, especially in lieu of his peculiar, yet enticing behavior. A really sexy dress, a candlelit dinner and a little mood music should do the trick. Now, all she needed was for Sidney to pick the dress and the music, and then tell her how in the world she was going to cook a meal when she could barely boil water.

“Sid, you are not going to believe who I spent the entire day with yesterday.” Samira shook out of her jacket and put on her apron. Her mind was so in overdrive that it took her a minute to notice that Sidney hadn’t even acknowledged that she was even in the room. Something wasn’t right. Normally, Sidney would have her favorite cup of hot latté waiting and ready to share the events from the last time they’d seen each other. When she looked over at him, he was working on his painting, acting as if she wasn’t in the room. With her brow raised with concern, she asked. “Sid, what’s wrong? Did something happen?”

Sidney finally turned her way. The look he gave her chilled her to the bones. After just staring at her for a long minute he finally said. “I called you three times yesterday. You didn’t answer and you didn’t call me back.”

Samira rushed to his side. “Sid, I’m sorry. Yesterday I went to church with Joshua…”

Sidney huffed. “I should’ve known he was involved somehow.” Sidney had never really been that curt with her, but he had really needed to talk to her and she wasn’t there for him. He was still troubled by the call he received from his father.

Samira grabbed his hand. “Sid, I’m sorry. I silenced my cell in church and just forgot to turn the ringer back on. By the time I made it home and realized I’d missed your calls, it was so late that I just thought to wait until we were here. If I had known you really needed me you know I would’ve been there for you.”

Sidney bowed his head. He knew that was the truth, but his father’s call had him in such a vile state that Samira was the closest person to lash out at. “Mi amour, I am so sorry. Please forgive me for acting this way.”

Samira wrapped her arms around his neck and he gladly accepted the hug. She knew that something was terribly wrong. She could see it in his eyes. She had never seen him so troubled in all the time she’d known him. Pulling back to look into his eyes, she asked. “Sid, tell me what’s wrong.”

Sidney took a deep breath.
